Bring your own key

Set up Lisseno with your OpenAI key.

Lisseno runs on your own OpenAI account. You add a key once, it’s stored locally on your Mac, and OpenAI bills you directly for what you use.

Start where you are

Path A

I already have an OpenAI API key.

Open Lisseno, go to Settings, and paste your key. Lisseno runs a small safe check and stores it in your macOS Keychain.

I don’t have one yet.

No problem. You’ll create one in your own OpenAI account — it takes a couple of minutes. Lisseno guides you to the right page.

Create a key
Never paste your API key into a website. Add it only inside the Lisseno app, and never share it with support or in chat.

Create an OpenAI API key

The key is created in your own OpenAI account — Lisseno can’t and doesn’t create one for you.

  1. In Lisseno, choose “I don’t have an OpenAI API key yet.”
  2. Lisseno opens the official OpenAI API keys page in your browser.
  3. Create a new project key in your OpenAI account.
  4. Copy the key once — OpenAI only shows the full secret at creation.
  5. Return to Lisseno and paste it. Lisseno validates it with a minimal, safe check.
  6. The key is stored locally in your macOS Keychain.

Where it goes in Lisseno

Open Settings → API key in the app, paste, and save. That’s the whole connection — there’s no Lisseno account and no key on our servers.

What it costs

You pay Lisseno for the app: monthly, annually, or lifetime. Separately, OpenAI bills your account for the API usage your translations consume. The figures below are rough estimates, not final invoices — check OpenAI pricing for exact rates.

Keep cost language as estimates. Your actual OpenAI spend depends on how much audio you translate and which model you choose.

Grant permissions

macOS asks for two permissions so Lisseno can capture the right audio and route your reply:

Microphone

So you can speak back across languages with Listen + Speak.

Screen & System Audio

So Lisseno can hear the app or call you want translated.

Your first translation

Pick a source — a browser tab, a meeting, or system audio.
Choose the language you want to hear it in.
Set your output — your headphones or speakers.
Press Start translating and listen.
